Any civil society group with funding from billionaire George Soros should be "swept out" of Hungary, a vice chairman of the ruling Fidesz party said on Tuesday at a press conference. In 1989, Viktor Orban, a liberal anti-communist student leader, received a Soros scholarship to study at Oxford University to familiarize himself with multi-party democracy.

Péter Juhász, Együtt (Together) deputy chairman and District 5 assemblyman, will become the opposition party's leader after it holds its elections in February, reports index.hu. Current Együtt chairman Viktor Szigetvári has encouraged Együtt members to vote for Juhász to take over his post as they prepare for national elections in 2018.

Political competition in Hungary will heat up next year and the opposition will have to create common purpose to stand up to the Fidesz party and its "total political warfare it has started against Hungary", Democratic Coalition (DK) leader Ferenc Gyurcsány told a press conference. The former prime minister summed up the past year, declaring that 2016 had been an "annus horribilis" for Hungary.

The European Anti-fraud Office (OLAF) has recommended that Hungary be compelled to return some EUR 283 million in EU development funds connected to the construction of Budapest's M4 metro line, according to a report by Politico Europe. Authorities uncovered "serious irregularities – fraud and possible corruption" in the financing of the EUR 1.7 billion project.

The Socialist Party's steering board is ready to support Szeged Mayor László Botka as the democratic opposition's candidate for prime minister in 2018, the party said. The Democratic Coalition (DK) party said the Socialists' backing of a potential Botka candidacy went against their earlier proposal to hold a pre selection process to determine the opposition's joint candidate for prime minister.

Hungarian Free Press reports that One of Hungary's national political weekly magazines, Figyelő, was bought by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's former adviser and government historian Mária Schmidt on Monday. While Ms. Schmidt promises to keep publishing the weekly, it is all but certain that the publication's critical, independent voice will be gone.
