We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

News from the European Parliament

New chapter in European democracy

A conference was held in Brussels by Maroš Šefčovič, vice-president of the European Commission with the title Preparation on European civil initiatives. Reporter on the issue, Member of European Parliament (MEP) Zita Gurmai and Nicolai Wammen, minister responsible for European affairs in Denmark also took part in the conference. The institution of European civil initiative was created by the Lisbon Treaty but the first initiatives will be started in April 2012. MEP Zita Gurmai, member of the Hungarian socialist delegation in the European Parliament and chair of PES Women, the woman organization of the European socialists, said that this initiative is the European innovation of the year.

Hungarian socialists re-elected

After the first half of the present five-year legislation period in the European Parliament was over, the positions in the EP were newly elected. Hungarian socialist Members of European Parliament could hold all their positions as a result of the elections in the EP, like they have had before. MEP Csaba Tabajdi, head of the Hungarian socialist delegation in the European Parliament said that all members of the Hungarian socialist delegation were respected and admitted by being re-elected to their positions. MEP Tabajdi was already elected as head of delegation in December 2011 until the end of the present parliamentary cycle. He has been elected to this position for over eight years now. Hungarian socialist MEP Edit Herczog was re-elected as treasurer of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. Hungarian socialist MEP Kinga Göncz could hold her position as vice-president of the parliamentary committee of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). Last but not least MEP Csaba Tabajdi was re-elected as co-president of the Intergroup for National Minorities and MEP Edit Herczog could hold her position as vice-president of the Intergroup for Small- and Medium Size Enterprises, too.

Excerpts form the press conference of Martin Schulz and Viktor Orbán, 2012-01-24, Brussels

Martin Schulz, EP President: "We had an exchange of views about more or less everything. It was, I must repeat in mutual respect, but it was also in mutual confrontation, I think we should not hide that we have in a lot of points different opinions. I must underline, and therefore I was grateful to the Prime Minister Orbán, I expressed my private view, not the view of the European Parliament, this is up to the debate in the Chamber, and to the Parliamentarian groups."

Martin Schulz, EP President: "I think, Prime Minister would be better advised not to go in such a confrontative way within his country he is doing, and more to reconcile the people instead to split the people. He has a complete different opinion about this and I have to accept that he has some arguments which were new for me and I will reconsider and I will think about, but for the time being we haven't changed our opinion. He insisted on his opinion, I insisted on my opinion."

Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister: "I just made clear to the Speaker that what is going on in Hungary is a consolidation politics. So what we try to do is to unify the people behind the economic and social program and not to split the society."

Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister: "I am sure that it just takes not more than several thousands meetings with Mr. Schulz and we will agree on the most important issues...

Martin Schulz, EP President: "Because I convince you"

Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister: "Discussions are not for the discussions. The discussions are for conclusions are for agreements. And I am absolutely ready to consult all the issues regardless how difficult these issues are in an open manner and to draw the conclusions if it is possible to draw the conclusion together and to find an agreement."

Martin Schulz, EP President: "My advice to the European institutions is to avoid everything which is at the end leading to an advantage of the Prime Minister to mobilize domestically people against Europe. So we must find the appropriate way to put forward and to impose at the end, in case of infringements, that the European rules are respected. Prime Minister Orbán is an efficient man and I said to him "compliments". He is an efficient man by taking on board in Brussels the European rhetoric and to blame the same rhetoric when he is in Budapest, as a kind of 'inadmissible approach'. So the Europeans should take into account that he is a clever man as party leader, but he should take into account that the Europeans are either not stupid and therefore we will try to find the way: nothing can be excluded."
