freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Downfall

Matolcsy is no different than poor Rózsa Hoffman (state secretary responsible for education) whose public education law was dictated completely by Viktor Orbán. But the economic policy still could be changed. We have already seen such changes in directions, and someone who has a two-third majority in the Parliament, who is able to shape the public legal system to its own image and still has more than one million fans, certainly could do that. But now a change in politics rather than in economic policy is needed. Because behind the populist slogan of the war of economic independence one could discover some illusive dreams as well such as the greed for a middle power status, the vision of the fall of western civilization, the disdain of the rules and actors of the liberal market economy and seclusion from globalization and European integration. This is Orbán himself and his belief, and, because of him, it has been the belief of Fidesz for 10 years. And now we are the spectators to the downfall of this policy. It is easy to win a majority to this policy, but hard to govern in its name in nowadays Europe, and it leads to isolation in foreign politics and apathy in internal affairs, not to mention the threshold of bankruptcy.
I do not believe that they would be able to change. They have been doing this for far too long. They have become obsessed with it. This is why I think that the turnaround on ‘IMF-policy’ is just a bluff. Even I assume that they have a sense of reality so if they really want to borrow money they do not insult their potential lender. In my opinion they just want to calm down the markets a little so they can figure out how to re-sell the same old product in a new wrapper. They can do it, at least in Hungary, where Fidesz has no inner conflicts, and the opposition is not a challenger yet.
This is the endgame, but it could last for years. The fallen are not losers so far. Only Hungary is.
