freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Germans got angry with Orbán

The German foreign minister made public his initiative that would assure greater power to the EU if member states violate the basic values of the community as Hungary and Romania did recently. Guido Westerwelle with 10 of his colleagues developed a document within the framework of a working group which would provide a solution not only to financial but moral crises as well – Die Welt reported . The essence of the initiative is the following: whenever antidemocratic powers gain influence in a member state then Brussels could take measures more effectively and speedily. The Commission would draw up a report and make recommendations; the Council in turn would call on the respected state to follow them. If this does not help, sanctions could be introduced, including the freezing of EU funds. Nowadays the procedure is long and ineffective.

Viviane Reding, commissioner responsible for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, supports the idea because in her view there is no effective mechanism that could deter the violation of basic values and could strengthen the rule of law in the EU.

The German initiative indicates the view of major European countries regarding Orbán's government. Although the Hungarian government would like to display the prime minister's meeting with Angela Merkel as a success, we learned from diplomatic sources that the opposite is true. Germans consider Orbán's economic and political measures as a rampage that hurt European values and in particular German enterprises as well.

Péter Szijjártó stated that the trickiest question would be the seven-year EU budget during the Merkel-Orbán meeting. However maybe it will just cover the rough reality.
