Együtt to meet Socialists-P's PM candidate Karácsony

Shortly after the leadership of LMP announced Tuesday afternoon that it would not initiate further talks among parties of the opposition, Hungarian Socialist Party-Dialogue (MSZP-P) prime ministerial candidate Gergely Karácsony announced on his official Facebook page that he would approach leaders of Együtt and Momentum Movement with a "substantial offer".

Wednesday morning, Momentum chairman András Fekete-Győr turned down Karácsony's offer in a letter that he also sent to news site, arguing that "opposition parties had eight years to discuss issues, but even three weeks before the elections they could only agree not to agree on anything, and are on the verge of being tangled up in a lawsuit." According to Fekete-Győr, 20 days before the April 8 general election it was better to "keep our mouths shut and act." Fekete-Győr noted that his party had withdrawn three of its candidates to bolster the opposition effort. "This helped the opposition moving closer to changing the government, not the scandalous weekend talks."
He also claimed that Momentum would be willing to withdraw additional candidates in favor of other opposition candidates under the condition that MSZP-P, Democratic Coalition (DK), LMP, and Jobbik also start to do so in favor of each other.
Együtt president Péter Juhász welcomed Karácsony's approach in a Wednesday afternoon video message that was broadcast live on Facebook. In the video, Juhász accepted Karáscony's invitation and expressed his disappointment that Momentum was not attending talks on cooperation. Juhász noted that his party had decided not to run candidates in 62 electoral districts in the belief that "those who run in all 106 electoral districts only serve [Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán's interest by further dividing the opposition vote."
Juhász also called on DK to negotiate with the rest of the opposition in order to achieve a broad agreement. The Együtt president stated that he would get in touch with LMP co-chair Bernadett Szél to start negotiations about candidate coordination in the individual electoral districts.
Referring to Fekete-Győr's statement, Juhász called Momentum's withdrawal of three candidates "insufficient," adding that "they have candidates running in 94 electoral districts, this is surely not the way to change the government." Juhász stressed that MSZP-P, DK, LMP, Momentum, and Együtt should agree to run just one opposition candidate against Fidesz's candidate in at least 50-60 electoral districts.
