freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Gyurcsány achieved one of his aims but a deal on opposition coordination was not made

Head of Democratic Coalition (DK) Ferenc Gyurcsány invited opposition party LMP to start negotiations but there is not yet a satisfactory result. It seemed as if the parties couldn't convince each other whether cooperation with far-right Jobbik is necessary to defeat governing Fidesz. Basically LMP's egoism and inflexibility held them back from further success.

The talks took about one and a half hours between MSZP-Dialogue, DK and LMP. Jobbik was also invited but they didn't attend. MSZP-Dialogue's candidate for PM Gergely Karácsony called it a success in that they were finally starting talks and that this is only the beginning of a process. They took note of Jobbik's decision not to participate but they asked LMP to take part in further cooperation talks since the coordination between left-wing parties can lead to the defeat Orbán's regime, too. Meanwhile, LMP staunchly believes that just one over-all opposition cooperation would lead to success. DK head Gyurcsány first regretted that Jobbik didn't join them but he stated that the fact of starting negotiations was a positive sign in itself. He added that left-wing voters are capable of defeating Fidesz in case of coordination. He respects LMP's position wishing for wider cooperation with Jobbik, but he doesn't agree with them. Anyway DK was open to coordination with LMP, not mentioning concrete numbers yet. All participants of the talks agreed in not helping out Fidesz if Orbán's party lost its majority.
