freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Socialists: no cooperation with Fidesz on billboard law or anything else

The Socialist Party is going to steer clear of any cooperation with ruling Fidesz as they aim to topple Fidesz in the 2018 general election, the party's press chief told a press briefing (after a few days of hesitations and incertainties - editor).

The party will therefore refrain from submitting a proposal for Friday's special parliamentary session, dedicated to the regulation of political billboard ads outside of the campaign period. A Socialist proposal "might have benefited Fidesz" and the Socialists want to avoid all forms of cooperation, even that of Fidesz supporting one of the Socialists' proposals, István Nyakó said.
This is a departure from the party's standpoint on Monday, when five parliamentary parties held talks on the Socialists' proposal on the bill. The "billboard bill", a piece of legislation aiming to ban political advertising on billboards outside of campaign periods, was sent back to parliament by President János Áder for reconsideration last week. Nyakó said that the change of approach was due to Socialist Prime Minister candidate László Botka introducing a new political era in the party. "No cooperation with Fidesz is accepted and anyone who goes against this would be excluded from the Socialist Party", he said.

Pro-Gov't Magyar Idők's Dorka Gabay reports that Lajos Simicska's company has placed over 4000 Jobbik giant billboards for an average fee of 230 Forints per month – several hundred times less than the usual fee. Fidesz argues that such a subsidy amounts to unfair political sponsorship that should be declared illegal.
In Népszava, former Nészabadság columnist Miklós Hargitay considers billboards as the last remnant of what was once a plethora of outlets through which the left could reach households throughout Hungary. In rural areas, he writes, people read the regional press and watch public television channels, all of which are dominated by the government. If posters are prevented from reverberating with political messages, he complains, then "even these last messaging surfaces will disappear". He also laments what he calls the low and vulgar standard of political posters nowadays.
