Even PM Orbán is shocked by Trump’s move to quit Paris Climate Agreement

Commenting on the United States decision to quit the Paris Climate Agreement, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he was "shocked" and noted "the Hungarian consensus" that "climate change is a reality, it is a threat and it is of a global nature requiring global-level action".

"The decision of the US president flies in the face of all this," Orbán said in an interview to public radio, adding that understanding the ramifications of Donald Trump's move would require a lot more reflection.
Answering a question suggesting that neither German Chancellor Angela Merkel nor Martin Schulz, the Social Democrats' chancellor candidate, considered the US a reliable partner, Orbán said "the Germans should show more modesty when it comes to remarks like that". He argued that "generalising statements have proved to be dangerous in European history". He insisted that Europe "has not been able to find the way to serve the interests of its citizens in the past 100 years without cooperation from the US," he said, adding that he was hopeful neither Germany nor the US would quit that cooperation.

Hungarian President János Áder called the US decision "morally unacceptable". Ever since the industrial revolution, the United States has carried the greatest historical responsibility for the increase in CO2 emissions, Áder said during a visit to a secondary school in Székesfehérvár, in western Hungary. The recent US decision is "disrespectful and irresponsible towards future generations" since it will seriously impact not only the generations to come in the United States but also people living in other parts of the world, he said.
"The Paris accord must be implemented even without the United States, because there is no other alternative; there is no other planet we can move to," Áder said. He added, however, that "it is not the end of the world", as all major signatories to the agreement have reaffirmed their commitment to it since last Thursday. In addition, 14 US states have announced that they will meet the targets of the agreement and a further 10 intend to join them, Áder noted. He also noted that originally Syria and Nicaragua were the only countries not to sign the agreement and that Hungary was the first EU member state to ratify it.
