Politicians' top salaries

László Kövér, Speaker of the parliament, tops the income list of politicians with his HUF 2,5 million (EUR 8600) monthly salary. Kövér receives subsidies over his EUR 5950 basic payment. Viktor Orbán, prime minister, lags behind as he earns HUF 2 million (EUR 7000). There are many MPs close to him on the list. Mostly the ones who hold several positions. (Hungarian regulation does allow MPs to work as mayor at the same time.) Antal Rogán earns HUF 1 million income as Fidesz floor leader and HUF 632,000 as mayor of Budapest 5th district. Zoltán Pokorni also has monthly income from three sources.

MPs can have housing subsidies if they do not have a place to live in Budapest or in the region where they gained the mandate.

Viktor Orbán introduced a HUF 2 million (EUR 7000) limit for salaries in public sector in 2010. He alluded for the country's economic difficulties. This provision has affected everyone employed in the public sector and in Hungarian National Bank. The payment of the Hungarian National Bank's governor was cut back from EUR 27 300 to EUR 7000.

Orbán's strict regulation does not apply for politicians and state owned companies' managers. Many of these managers have a EUR 7000 salary without the subsidies and bonuses.
