freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Lajos Bokros: „We need to subvert the regime from the inside"

There is a rumor making its round, according to which the former chancellor is about to establish a conservative-liberal party, which is conspicuously absent from the political spectrum. Although he was not ready to tell anything about his political intentions yet, he revealed that the next election will be a choice between democracy and dictatorship.

Brussels is very frequently thought of as a scapegoat for all our economic woes, even though everything that has been built recently comes from the European taxpayers' wallet. Is this a fair assumption?

I will go further than that. It is a gross understatement. The government is badmouthing the EU day in day out, but, at the same time, we take the development money, what is more, we demand more money. This behavior is morally revolting and it is not fair towards the taxpayers of Germany, Britain and the other large countries which are paying for our living standard here. We have to use their money and their trust with caution, because we have to let them know that the development of the eastern and central parts of Europe is a common interest.

There seems to be a growing criticism building up towards Europe for not distancing themselves more from the Hungarian government, thereby legitimizing its behavior. What is more, the recent meeting between the prime minister and the German Chancellor made it clear that no criticism is imminent. Is the European Peoples' Party defending Mr. Orbán?

The European People's Party is not the same as the ruling German parties. The Hungarian Fidesz is one of the largest parties of the PP, and their leader openly sympathizes with Mr. Orbán. The criticisms mainly go through via diplomatic channels, so they are unknown to the wider public. Unfortunately, the present economic state of Europe is so worrying that all the activities of the government seem insignificant in comparison.
