freelogoOur objective is to provide English speaking readers interested in Hungary with a well balanced view of political activities in Hungary by featuring contents from various printed and online sources together with our own commentaries. We are convinced that Hungary is built on all sorts of different ideas, thoughts and opinions and, despite of the new Media Law, our aim is to provide an alternative and reliable source of information – contrary to the one-sided press of the government – for those who want to hear the voice of a free Hungary.

Afterlife of the UD case

The UD case was a classical spy story: a private company (and/or some of its employees) collected information about politicians, mostly on political orders, by secret service methods as they are called colloquially, taking part in the transformation of the internal balances of power of an opposition party. Briefly, the history is as follows: those who are good will be punished by all means.

This September, the Curia (earlier Supreme Court) acquitted Ibolya Dávid. The former chairman of MDF was accused of publishing secretly made records (unauthorized data handling) – not least concerning herself. Accordingly, one of the key figures of the UD-story is not guilty, whilst the most serious consequences affect her, as she still has to sue for many years in order to be able to clear herself, at least in moral terms, on a matter in which, originally, she was unambiguously an aggrieved party (and not the perpetrator) – even according to both the rational mind and the sense of justice of an average individual.

And her political career broke up – maybe without the possibility of recovering. The story itself started in more than four years ago, in September 2008, however, in order to get a clear picture, we need to begin rolling up the events from a little earlier date. Fidesz lost the election in 2002 still "on its own", but the party and the party's leadership continues to think even today that Ibolya Dávid and MDF were to blame for their defeat in the 2006 elections.

In September 2008, first Kornél Almássy, the challenger of Ibolya Dávid at that time alleged that he was to be discredited and blackmailed, and then, Ibolya Dávid came forward with explosive information, disclosing a voice record that gave a theme to the public life for many months. In the recorded telephone talk, János Tóth, general manager of UD Zrt. informed Sándor Csányi, CEO of OTP Bank that Kornél Almássy wanted to commission UD Zrt. via András Tombor to search for information encumbering Ibolya Dávid and MDF. The event caused a national scandal, from which all players tried to distance themselves in the eyes of the public. The investigations launched by the National Investigation Agency (NNI) within a short time discovered amazing things in the environment of UD: the investigation documents mention attempts to access the servers of various government agencies and of the Office of National Security (NBH), it emerged the possibility of bribing people at the Police, the customs authority, the tax authority and the NBH, the purchase of machine-guns and ammunition, the preparation of an environmental study about Gordon Bajnai and Ferenc Gyurcsány, the illegal installation of cameras and interception in a lawyer's office, the production of false evidence as well as physical coercions (breaking of limbs), etc. This investigation had the same result as the civil litigations initiated against the assumed aggrieved parties of the case: all of them decayed in different phases.

The biggest portion of the blows were given to the aggrieved person herself, to Ibolya Dávid: although she won at every instance in legal terms, at a human level she lost everything. In the past four years, she appeared in the media practically only as an accused person, she has no party and no future. Albeit, only one single "sin" became certain for her: she did not want MDF to become a tool for bringing Viktor Orbán into power. But the country did not win either: by having MDF removed from the campaign due to the UD case, we significantly got nearer to the two-thirds overwriting all the rules.
